Mag-Lev or High Speed Train
The idea of a high speed train connecting Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport to the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport has been a dream for years. This is a project of which I am in favor. However, as I have stated elsewhere, a project is only acceptable for funds from the federal government if it is permitted by our Constitution. Some would argue it promotes, and regulates, interstate commerce. I believe that to be a stretch and it is those types of stretches that keep permitting project after project being approved and accepted as “legitimate” government projects. I have also said the weaning off of this cycle will be slow, but must begin now.
The idea of a mag-lev train must be promoted. It is in the best interest of the entire nation to develop our rail system, especially along the coasts, and trans-continental. To say otherwise is foolish. Our federal government has invested in the interstate highway system, and the obligation of such will be with us forever. As part of the federal highway budget, I believe we should begin the process of a national rail system. However, I think as much private investment as possible should be sought. I believe the government should allow the private sector to build, maintain, and yes, profit, from the rail system. Since a rail system is not one that would be conducive to our traditional free market, competition based system, I understand some oversight, and funding, will be required. The limited funding that is made should not be based on political connections or influence, like our district experienced with I-85.
The process of studies and such has started. We should continue with such. As an efficient and appropriate rail system will reduce the use of our highway system, it is logical to invest in the system. However, I cannot stress enough, this MUST be a complete cooperation between the federal government, the states, and private investment. The main thing the federal government should do is to remove barriers, such as laws, that would limit or otherwise impede the creation and implementation of our national rail system.
For the record, when elected, I intend on taking Amtrak to DC from Atlanta as often as possible.
I have decided to run for congress after many years of people asking me, "Why don't you run for congress?"
I believe the current Republican leadership has failed Republicans everywhere, but more than that, they have failed Americans.
There is nothing wrong with true Conservative principles. The problem is the lack of actually living up to those principles.
I hope that my one voice in Congress, along with the thousands of voices of support for me, will usher in a new wave of conservative Republicans that will always stand by the principles of the Republican Party. In doing so, our country will have better days ahead than anyone could ever possibly imagine.
